Why steel design leans on tables (section properties) more than concrete does

A concrete beam's dimensions are whatever the engineer specifies and the formwork is built to. A steel beam is picked from a finite, pre-manufactured catalogue of standard shapes — a genuinely different everyday design workflow.

A reinforced concrete section is cast in place, in formwork built specifically for that project — its width, depth, and reinforcement layout can, in principle, be almost any dimension a designer chooses, computed from scratch for that specific member. A structural steel section, by contrast, is hot-rolled (or otherwise fabricated) at a mill to a defined, standard catalogue of shapes — European IPE, HEA and HEB sections, or American W-shapes, among others — and a designer overwhelmingly selects the best-fitting section from that finite, pre-manufactured list, rather than specifying arbitrary dimensions and having a one-off shape rolled just for that project, which generally isn't practical or economical outside of very large or unusual jobs.

What that means for day-to-day design

Because standard steel sections already exist in a known, finite list, every geometric property a designer would need — cross-sectional area, moment of inertia about both axes, elastic and plastic section modulus, radius of gyration, torsional properties — can be (and is) precomputed once for every standard shape and published in section-property tables, whether by the mills themselves, national steel institutes, or embedded directly alongside code documents. A steel designer's everyday workflow leans heavily on looking a section's properties up rather than deriving them from first principles for every single member, which is a genuinely different day-to-day habit than reinforced concrete design, where those same properties have to be computed fresh from whatever dimensions were just chosen.

This isn't an absolute rule — built-up or fabricated sections (welded plate girders, for instance) do get custom-designed from scratch when a standard rolled shape genuinely doesn't fit the job — but it's enough of a real difference in default workflow and design culture that it shapes how steel design tools are built.
